IL DUOMO
La cattedrale di Siena è un importante punto di riferimento per l’intera stile architettonico Gotico italiano. Iniziato nel 1230, rappresenta un modello fondamentale per le cattedrali e fu successivamente adottato in molte altre città. A Giovanni Pisano (1248) è dovuta la facciata inferiore romanica che consiste di tre maestosi portali decorati con statue anch’esse del Pisano, I cui originali sono custoditi nel museo della cattedrale. La parte superiore in stile gotico fiammingo, fu terminata alla fine del XIV secolo da Giovanni di Cecco. I tre cuspidi sono ora decorati con mosaici di Augusto Castellano (1877).
I lavori di costruzione di questo complesso religioso furono costantemente interrotti per una serie di ragioni, quali la mancanza di fondi e la peste del 1348. Come risultato il maestoso progetto che intendeva sistemare una costruzione ancora più grande su quella già esistente fu presto abbandonato. Tutto quello che rimane di quel sogno sono alcune mura del perimetro frontale, la navata destra e le mura della facciata.

  THE CATHEDRAL
Siena Cathedral Is an important point of reference for the whole of ltalian Gothic architecture. Begun towards 1230, it provided a basic model for a cathedral and was subsequently adopted in many other cities. The lower Romanesque façade is due to Giovanni Pisano (1284) and consists ofthree Iarge portals decorated with statues also by Pisano, the originals ofwhich are housed in the Cathedral Museum. The upper part, in the flamboyant Gothic style, was finished towards the end of the fourteenth century by Giovanni di Cecco. The three cusps are now covered with mosaics by Augusto Castellani (1877).
The building works of this religious complex were constantly being interrupted for a variety of reasons, such as lack of funds or the piague of 1348. As a result, the magnificent project which had intended to piace a much larger building aiongside the one already existing was soon abandoned. All that remains of that dream are several of the front perimeter walls, the right-hand side nave and the wall of the façade.
